Luray Caverns

A trip up I-81, Luray Caverns is the largest show cave on the East Coast (open since 1878). The world’s largest musical instrument (The Great Stalacpipe Organ) covers 3.5 acres and was created by Leland W. Sprinkle in the late 1950s. You will also get to see mirrored pools, limestone formations, and mud flowstones.

Grand Caverns

The oldest continually showing show cavern in America (established in 1806), Grand Caverns was declared a National natural Landmark in 1973. The cavern tour is an amazing experience and the grounds also has activities like mini golf, a swimming pool, and gem mine if the kids are looking for something to do above ground.

Shenandoah Caverns

If accessibility is important, know that Shenandoah Caverns is the only cave system in Virginia to offer elevator service! While the entire cavern is not ADA compliant (to preserve the natural formations), the cavern is definitely the most accessible of the caves on this list. The stalactite, stalagmite, and flowstone formations are breathtaking and the guided tours are both informational and enjoyable.

Caverns at Natural Bridge

The caverns at Natural Bridge are a true sight to see. Venture over 340 feet deep under the surface to find the Natural Bridge Cave Beetle, learn more about the history of the caves, and see gorgeous rock formations. The Colossal Dome Room and Mirror Lake are two of the highlights you can experience on a guided tour. Be careful – legend has it that the caverns are haunted!
