The Natural Bridge is located near two of the State’s premier
paddling rivers, the historic James River and the exciting Maury
River both located within minutes of the Natural Bridge.
The James River known as “Americas River”, the river that helped
found our nation has more history than any other river in the
country. Even today, remnants from the James & Kanawha Canal
System originally conceived by George Washington after his
Presidency can be found along many sections of the River. The
Upper James River features numerous public boat landings along
nearly 61 miles from Iron Gate to the Snowden Dam just down
river from the James River Gorge featuring the exciting Balcony
Falls rapid that attracts paddlers from all over the State.
Listed below are several of the more popular trip options for
the recreational paddler.
- Horseshoe Bend to Buchanan Landing: 9 miles, 3 – 4 hours. Great
for canoeing or kayaking this half day trip that features
impressive scenery and numerous exciting rapids. This is a great
family paddling trip 15 minutes the Natural Bridge.
- Buchanan to Arcadia – 6 miles, 2-3 hours. A step up in
difficulty than the Horseshoe Bend trip this section of river

and keep cool. This is a perfect family day trip while enjoying
your stay at the Natural Bridge Resort.
The Maury River starts and ends entirely in Rockbridge County
and has some wonderful paddling options close by to the Natural
Bridge. The Maury River, is one of the largest tributaries to
the Upper James River and is best run before July due to water
